In everyday language, many types of boats are also called sailing yachts. More precisely, however, so-called monohulls also fall under this definition. These now differ from the other types of boats by their keel.

Important Criteria When You Buy Yachts

If you want to buy a yacht, there are a few tips. First, you can turn your attention to the details of the yacht. Are there scratches, for example? Such scratches would be no problem at all on steel-hulled boats, as they are easy to fix. On polyester-hulled boats, however, they would be problematic. Small spots of rust can likewise be read as a negative sign. Also pay attention to the condition of the teak deck. Especially if you don't use a surveyor, make sure the boats are lifted out of the water. That way you can also see what condition the boat is in below the waterline. Blisters on the hull point to osmosis, which would require an expensive repair. After that, you could also check the rudder; give it a good shake for this purpose.

Also check all the zinc anodes, since they are an indicator of the hull's condition. Inside the boat, look at the paintwork, the water from the faucet as well as the drain, and also the equipment (the refrigerator, for example). Also check the keel bolts for any corrosion or leaks. Check the bilge pumps as well. Pay attention to the engine too, including its insulation and the engine room. Set the sails. Check the electronics as well. Also review the boat's documentation and ask the seller for the owner's manual. And as a private individual, you should make sure that the important sales tax or VAT has been paid.

Types of Sailing Yachts

When you buy yachts, you can choose between various models:

  1. Dinghy
  2. Keelboat

Dinghies have a centerboard, so they can capsize, but they cannot sink, since even when swamped their hull has enough buoyancy. Keelboats, on the other hand, cannot capsize because their keel acts as a counterweight. Keelboats can sink, however, since when swamped there is far too little buoyancy. Exceptions would be, for example, the unsinkable sailboats from the company Etap. Boats with a keel, meaning with a ballast share, are called keelboats, sailing yachts, sailing ships or sailboats. The term sailboat can also be used for sailing dinghies.

There are also the following models:
