A luxury yacht is a yacht that is seaworthy and lavishly equipped. These vessels are exclusive and very expensive, so the super-rich use them for status and pleasure. Just as with cars or aircraft, there are different manufacturers of yachts.

Luxury yacht manufacturers: what does a yacht cost?

When it comes to the purchase price, there are hardly any upper limits, as the super-rich prove. On the used market it is naturally much cheaper. The purchase cost of, say, a used 12-meter (roughly 40-foot) yacht can already be in the low six figures. Yacht upkeep is not exactly cheap either; it is said that around 10% of the purchase price accrues as maintenance costs.

Example: purchase price $500,000 * 10% = $50,000

So if you buy a yacht for $500,000, for example, you have to expect maintenance costs of about $50,000 per year. Anyone who owns such a large yacht also needs a crew, of course, and the cost of that is not yet included.

How do you become a manufacturer?

A completed degree in naval architecture and marine engineering is an advantage, and you should also not be averse to founding your own company. Without a shipyard and skilled workers, a shipbuilding company is not possible. Another option is to join an already experienced company and try to work your way as far up as possible. If you succeed, all paths are open to you as a manufacturer, and you can decide for yourself which yachts you want to sell and which you don't.
